Treen – sets design

11 สิงหาคม 2008 at 19:06 (2D, 3D, Animation, project "Treen")

I tried to visualize mood and tone of each scenes.
I know my drawing skill is not very good in this field,
but I hope it gives impression of how to achieve the scenes.

1. Rice field where Treen appear for the first time.
The sky’s darkening, like Treen’s emotion when he’s desperate.

2. Village road, early morning. Sun is not visible, thick fog that you can’t see very clearly.
Just like the tone of this scene when everyone is confusing.

3. Living room, where kids discuss their plan. Warm and cozy.

4. In front of the Military building. Broad daylight, high contrast represents anger/madness.

5. Military’s building. Night time, so mysteriuos. Don’t know what awaits.

6. Protester’s stand. Beatiful star-lit night sky. Happy, hopefully…

Treen – Charactor design

11 สิงหาคม 2008 at 11:46 (2D, 3D, Animation, project "Treen")

These are the look of the people in Treen, as some of you request to see.

It’s the look I had in mind while writing the script,
though that may change later. I’m not quite good at charactor design as you can see.

Knowing I have a very tight schedule to finish this project, details are kept very simple.
and there’s a lot more charactors to do…

I’m getting back to work now.

Bonji

10 สิงหาคม 2008 at 22:36 (3D, Animation, Tech, project "Treen")

Bonji is Treen’s pet dog…. yes, he’s a dog….

This one is an attemp to try using displacement map
by following instructions from this page

It’s so amazing how less than 2000 triangles can produce such details in the final rendering.
and the rendering time is quite acceptable.
I think this is better approach than the Level of Detail I have tried on Treen previously.
As I don’t have to bind every mesh resolutions, and the scene is not heavy.
One drawback is the displacement map file is quite huge.
When converted to mentalray ’s .map, a 2048×2048 map could take almost 70 megs.
Add another 50 megs of normal map, 20 megs of scene file…
This is not an issue for in-house production.
But for cooperation over the internet (what I’m planning to do), it could be crucial.

I use multipass rendering technique recently learned from Lucas Martell here
check out his podcast, good stuffs.

well, 5 passes are adequate for me now.
I may need more as there are more actors and objects in the scene.

Meet Treen!

1 สิงหาคม 2008 at 20:54 (2D, 3D, Animation, project "Treen")

He’s from a planet far, far away.
While our earth is blue when looking from the space, his is green.
Unfortunately, something terrible has happened, and his green world withered…

So he traveled million lightyears away from home just to warn his cousins on our earth.
Too bad his cousins are inanimate, helpless to speak on their own… ofcause, they are trees!
Treen must do something to stop the terrible event that’s about to happen here…

Are you ready to meet him?
